Weight Loss and Healthy Nutrition

Overweight has become a major public health concern in virtually all developed countries, while the percentage of overweight people also tends to rise rapidly in the developing nations which is why many health experts consider it a pandemic. Cases of obesity caused by medical condition are extremely rare, while genetic predispositions and slow metabolism are unlikely to cause excess weight which leaves unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle as the leading causes of obesity.

You cannot avoid dietary changes if you want to get rid of those pounds but choosing the right weight loss diet plan can pose a great challenge due to virtually countless diets that claim to be the best choice. There are also diet plans that promise dramatic weight loss in a very short period of time with little effort. However, most of weight loss diet plans that can be found on virtually every step do not work or are unhealthy, or both. But how can you tell which weight loss diet is effective (and healthy) and which one is a scam? To be able to find a diet plan that actually works and does not pose any health risks, it is important to understand how and why excess body fat is formed.

Healthy Diet

Through diet, your body obtains all the necessary nutrients as well as energy in form of calories. However, if you consume too much calories the body will store them as a “reserve energy” in a form of fat. This means that you need to force your body to start using that energy it has stored as fat if you want to lose weight which requires reduced daily caloric intake and increased physical activity. However, this also means that weight loss diet plans that base on restriction of certain nutrients, most often carbohydrates and fats are not the best approach. In addition, neither fats nor carbohydrates are your enemy. On the contrary, you need to obtain all the necessary nutrients even when trying to lose weight as well as eat foods you enjoy. But how is it possible to lose weight without giving up foods that are high in calorie content? Well, the answer is very easy. You need to reduce the amount of high-calorie foods and increase the amount of foods that are high in essential nutrients and low in calorie content at the same time.

Low-calorie diet that includes foods you enjoy eating the most is the best and the healthiest approach to both weight loss and healthy body weight maintenance. Successful weight loss is often an ongoing process which means that reaching a healthy body weight is just one but highly important step in this process. You should be proud of yourself when reaching the desired body weight but your work is far from over because all lost pounds will return very soon if you return to your “old” eating habits which is also one of the main problems with the so-called fast weight loss diets. They may enable you to lower those numbers on your weighting scale but they do not enable you to keep lost pounds from returning. In addition, it is very difficult to burn large amount of calories in a very short period which means that it may not be fat you are losing but perhaps water or even muscle tissue.

No one has become overweight overnight and therefore it is unrealistic to expect any noticeable changes in a very short time period. Overweight does pose a risk of a number of health problems and it is completely understandable if you would like to reach a healthy body weight in the shortest time possible. However, it is important to be aware that there are no quick fixes when it comes to weight loss and that diet plans that promise fast results are both ineffective and unhealthy. Also, keep in mind that successful weight loss requires change of both dietary and exercise habits.
